The first advice I received on arriving here was not to drive at night. Apparently moose are often on the roads, and a moose-vehicle collision would not be a pleasant thing. These big animals are not native to Newfoundland. A pair was introduced to the island in 1904, and according to information on the
Parks Canada website, the population is estimated at 125,000 to 150,000 moose. That's a large number, especially of an introduced species for which there are no longer any predators present on the island.
There are many signs on the highways warning of moose/car collisions. I'll be sticking to daylight driving.
